Just a few words about the show yesterday. A while ago I was asked to play 60 seconds of a Prince song on DWDD. Due the amount of enthousiasm from the audience they decided to organize a show with all of the guests including me. I was honored because I knew some of the other names that would join me that night. Besides this, it was organized at the Melkweg which is one of the few places I’ve never played before so I was a bit thrilled. A few days back they told me the concert was sold out so I was really excited and yesterday I was nervous like shit. Not healthy. But to me, it was a really big deal. And I wanted to make this count. So the soundcheck didn’t promise me anything good since my nerves caused me to forget a lot of stuff. Mainly lyrics. Then I needed to wait hours and do make up and stuff, so I had allllll the time in the world to drive myself insane. I must say as a sidenote that the people of the crew made it as comfortable as possible so, again, thank you for that. When it was my time to show up I walked on stage like a 6 year old. I was shaking all over because there I was, sitting on my own, in front of 800 people. Quiet. Just, waiting for me to start. First thing I noticed through my nerves was that, the vibe, or atmosphere was amazing. I felt only positive vibes and NOTHING else. I think thats what caused me to just play and not forget any lyrics haha. So anyhow, after I was done there was this huge applause and a sudden relief but apparently not enough because I basically ran away. And afterwards someone told me that Matthijs van Nieuwkerk called me back but, I had no memory of this once however haha. I met some cool people and I think that pretty much sums it all up.

Ofcourse, when there’s video material or something. I’ll write a blog called Part II. For now, here’s a pic of the soundcheck.

A while ago I informed everyone that I would do a show at the Melkweg based on the DWDD Recording sessions. Due change of plans, it is no longer on September 11th but on the 4th of September.

Dont Say A Word

September 11th will be the day that I’ll get to perform the entire song ‘When You Were Mine’ at the Melkweg Amsterdam. Together with all the other artists that have performed at DWDD Recordings. It will be the same sort of setting meaning I will play by myself, on an acoustic guitar. Just, at the Melkweg. The other half of the artists will perform on September 4th. For more info click HERE

De vergelijkingen met Prince gaan zeker op als je deze jongen hoort zingen. Stefan Schill: “Ik hoop dat Bospop ons eerste memorabele festival wordt”

Op Bospop (8, 9 en 10 juli) staat Stefan Schill geprogrammeerd tussen grootheden als Ringo Starr en Joe Cocker. De druk om te presteren is dus groot, maar de jonge gitarist staat te popelen om zich te bewijzen op de festivals. “Volgend jaar wil ik op Lowlands en Pinkpop staan.”

Stefan Schill is 1 van de jongste acts op Bospop 2011. In tegenstelling tot de vele gevestigde namen op het festival in Weert heeft de band nog een hoop te bewijzen. Na het uitbrengen van debuutalbum Dont Say A Word volgden optredens in De Wereld Draait Door en een succesvolle Europese tour als voorprogramma van Philip Sayce. Het eerste memorabele festivaloptreden van de band moet echter nog komen. Stefan Schill hoopt dat dit op Bospop gaat gebeuren. “Tussen al die grote namen kan ik in ieder geval niet gaan lopen aanklooien. De lat ligt erg hoog!”

Bospop

Schill komt graag op festivals. “Ik ben wel een liefhebber van het milieu dat op zo’n festival rondhangt. Ik ben een keer eerder op Bospop geweest en er hangt gewoon een hele goede sfeer. Dat gevoel dat de mensen in de tent hebben, wil je op het podium ook hebben.” Op Bospop is dat een zondagmiddaggevoel. Stefan Schill staat op zondagmiddag om half een geprogrammeerd. Een middagoptreden op het kleine podium van Bospop is mooi, maar niet het einddoel voor Schill. Een tweede album is in aantocht en met die plaat hoopt hij de deuren te openen naar de grote festivals: “Ik wil volgend jaar op Lowlands en Pinkpop staan,” aldus de pas 21-jarige Nederlander.

Prince

Aan zelfvertrouwen geen gebrek bij Schill, maar wat wil je ook: sinds Dont Say A Word wordt hij aanhoudend vergeleken met Prince. Een toevalligheid, volgens Schill: “Ik luisterde eigenlijk nooit naar hem. Ik ben dat pas gaan doen toen de mensen die link hadden gelegd. Hendrix stond wel in de platenkast van mijn vader, maar Prince niet. Voor het nieuwe album ben ik wel gaan luisteren hoe hij dingen doet en dat gaan jullie wel terughoren, denk ik.”Ook op het podium heeft Schill met zijn postuur en houding iets weg van Prince, “Mensen zeggen wel eens dat ik iets van zijn moves heb, maar wat dat dan precies is, dat weet ik niet. Prince is veel beweeglijker dan ik ben. Maar hij is wel een voorbeeld als het gaat om het bespelen van een groot publiek. Ik heb hem onlangs op Rock Werchter gezien, het zou een droom zijn om ooit zelf op dat festival te staan. Of ik er klaar voor ben om voor zo’n groot publiek spelen, dat weet ik niet. Maar uiteindelijk wil ik alles kunnen, groot, klein, festivals, noem maar op.”

Buurman

Hoewel er vroeger nooit een plaat van Prince op stond in huize Schill heeft hij wel een vermoeden hoe het geluid van Prince in zijn eigen muziek geslopen is. “Ik heb gitaar leren spelen van mijn buurman. Een muzikant die naast ons kwam wonen toen ik een jaar of tien was, net twee weken nadat ik mijn eerste gitaar kreeg. Hij bood aan om af en toe samen te oefenen in zijn studio. Hij is iemand die net als ik geen noten kan lezen, maar vooral vanuit persoonlijkheid speelt. Hij was een enorme Prince-fanaat, in de goede zin van het woord. Onbewust heeft hij mij denk ik iets van het geluid van Prince meegegeven.”

Since I blogged on my very own website. Sorry for that. There’s a lot going on and I assure you that in the end you’ll be glad I didn’t waste my time on writing useless stuff and instead work on some music. Cause that’s mainly the reason of my busy-ness. The last few months I’ve been working on new material with new musicians and trying to get this second record thing going. Which kinda means that I’ve also been working with some producers and recorded some pre-production material. I hope that not far from now, everything will slowly slide into a production process which will eventually result in a brand new record. I know I said this before, but I’ll try to do some more updating on this website from now on. In the meanwhile, visit one or more of my shows. I promise, you’ll have a good time. So yeah, see yall at….. Bospop maybe?
